The Preface

Taken from The Bumper Book of 4000 Original Quotations and Aphorisms

For his own time, and ours, Dr Samuel Johnson dispensed much sound advice, and may in part be blamed (or credited) for this present offering.

A man” (he wrote in March 1750) “may write at any time, if he will set himself doggedly to it.”

My family and close circle will attest that in terms of sheer doggedness the writer has more than validated the good doctor`s assertion. On the other hand they have suffered much in the process being continuously bombarded over a lengthy period with ever new aphorisms to consider and give of their opinion. I am most grateful to each and everyone of them.

Within its covers are recorded 4,000 original quotations reflecting most, but not all, subjects under the sun. Mainly one-liners, a number being in short verse form - all are necessarily personal, representing as they do the Author’s view of the world, religion, mankind, politics, love, marriage, children, art, the media , etc, etc.

Some may provoke argument or debate, some will I hope amuse, others doubtless will produce yawns and prove a useful aid to sounder sleep, and a goodly number will I believe find common consent.

Be all that as it may it is not my wish that any will frighten either the horses or small children, and neither is it my wish to become embroiled in fierce disputation concerning specific entries. In this regard I give the last word to Dr Johnson.... “Sir, I have found you an argument; but I am not obliged to find you an understanding”.

Read on and do, if overcome by a strong urge, quote me.... the name's …… STRUDWICK ……..Richard Strudwick !
